Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the SithDiretto daGeorge Lucas
Though highly criticized for it, Lucas' CGI strokes are magnificent here. Their full aesthetic potential unveiled in the cathartic duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan, but in display throughout. The story unfurls digitally, also with an outstanding use of wide-angles and close-ups. Many scenes mirror both historical and cinematic events, yet notoriously its ultimate tragedy remains in the breaking up of a friendship.
A fascinating, admittedly flawed, but deeply powerful film: Lucas' vigorous response to years of critical lambaste. An assassination montage reminiscent of "The Godfather," a silent telepathic exchange to a haunting ambient piece, and nods to the likes of "Battleship Potempkin" help cement it as an operatic tragedy reverent of its influences and accomplished in its own right. Liberty dies with thunderous applause.
In every movie, I absolutely had feelings lean to empathize and sympathise with the villain but Darth Vader of new Star Wars Trilogy's killed all of my Anakin Skywalker expectations I've imagined when I've watched Vader in Star Wars IV-V and VI. He was always too weak, looser and annoying.
I think Kenobi should have asked a question instead of being sorry at the end: "How were you the chosen one!?"
Well first I have to mention this dialogue, as Laika has done before: ANAKIN: "You are so beautiful." PADME: "It's only because I'm so in love . . ." ANAKIN: "No! It's because I'm so in love with you!" Oh brother. This is just a tiny bit better that episodes 1 & 2, but it still is a piece of interstellar radioactive garbage.
A more interesting (and rewarding) viewing experience when I paid more attention to how important the role of the "mentor" is in this particular film. Who displays more faith, confidence and trust in Anakin? The Light Side warriors, and their adherence to a monolith code, are vulnerable in this. A lack of trust, and a loss of attention in their relationships, results in their order's and the Republic's downfall.
