Stoker Diretto da Park Chan-wook
…Park does such a superb job of sustaining tension, via off-kilter compositions and expert cross-cutting, that the movie is nearly over before you realize how fundamentally hollow and conventional it is.

For all the talent involved, Stoker does not transcend the limitations of a well-financed studio project. While endowed with the right amount of suspense, hidden skeletons, double crossing and murderous psychosis, Miller’s screenplay exemplifies what’s wrong in so many contemporary American films: the conceit that everything takes place in a middle-class or upper-middle family house – a stand-in for the American dream, I suppose – disconnected from social and historical reality.

It’s a fiction on the subject of the fiction—the lies—on which a family and its mythology are based, and the devastatingly corrosive, corrupting power of those lies to undo the family, the sense of identity, and the values that are built on them. The result is a sort of comedy-stripped “Fractured Fairy Tale” about growing up in a family of an apparently exemplary merit that is built on a myth of cloistered exceptionalism.

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film Stoker

"SOMETIMES WE DO THE BAD TO PREVENT OURSELVES TO DO WORSE." Voluptuous, sick, perverse, sensual, languorous, vibrating like the rope stretched by a bow or your finger on the trigger. 4,5/5. Image & montage d'une vertigineuse virtuosité.

  • Guillermo Padilla's rating of the film Stoker

Perfect example of a cinematic, well-directed orchestra, where each element: photography, editing, acting, art is perfectly bonded. Turning an ordinary thriller, into something extraordinary. Everything is perfect until the last 5 minutes, when an abrupt decrescendo makes the film does not culminate in height.

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Stoker

More than most, a "modern" Hitchcock; the remote country house & dark family secrets of Rebecca, mixed with the psycho-sexual unravelling of Marnie. Shades of classic Shyamalan also; with dizzying twists & turns, characters detached from reality; a "pure cinema" emphasis on colour & composition, Mia W. channeling B.D. Howard and a strange, off-kilter atmosphere that slides between darkly comic & genuinely disturbing.

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film Stoker

A lot of stuff going on but nothing was really happening. An over the top story that worked in the end but was only amusing at best. Chan Wook seemed to have no interest in the story whatsoever, only in the mood (he would be delightful directing an episode of American Horror Story) and the terrible cast was really on top of their lame, so all the theatricality of it really felt tacky. Great sound design though.

  • comeandsee's rating of the film Stoker

Hard to reflect on this one. Visually outstanding, probably his best visual work as he is inventive and his framing is perfection. However, it has none of the energy or trauma of his best work, and it is hard to ignore the fact that the film is essentially empty as a result. Gorgeous to behold, but without the resonance or after-effects of his real masterpieces.

  • ig_____or's rating of the film Stoker

An unconventional and hitchcockian (dare I say it) take on family secrets and dysfunctional relationships, this movie is just my type. Sleek and beautifully shot, it carefully deconstructs a morbid secret with great confidence and rhythm. The three lead actors are incredible (Kidman in that cold speech on motherhood, and Wasikowska and Good with their chemistry at the piano) and it gets even better on a second watch!

  • Palmat's rating of the film Stoker

Solid effort once again from Park! The script is not that great to be honest but Park does his best to keep things interesting. The cast is good, but I think that Kidman is largely wasted in the role she was given. Best effort comes from Goode who really brought his A-game. The production work is stellar and while the movie is very slow in the beginning it picks up steam at the halfway mark and never lets up.

  • T. J. Harman's rating of the film Stoker

Strong performances from the 3 stars and Park's direction/visuals really make this really pop as a southern gothic creeper. Complains about the plot/ or the logic of this or that seem beside the point.
