2,5 I wish this film had as a last resort the deceiving simplicity of a gadget, user-amiable but built on heaps of arcane programming inside, aiming at purposes that range from life-changing to downright trivial. Thought fuels anything including triteness. That Soo boiled down & trimmed his style out of an allergy for outmoded story-telling gimmicks & that he had a point. But hell, Kangwon's a parched dry catchment!
I realize that you don't normally watch SSH films for their technical brilliance, but this is ridiculous. There's a boom mike at the 4 minute mark that stays there for an entire minute. It hangs down in the scene like a giant fuzzy ding-dong. That's what we call a deal breaker.
If the very young Hong still seems a little over-bearing in his character beats, social satire or visual motifs he more than makes up for it with an eccentric sense of rhythm and structural sense that clearly marks him as a master...with his switch to video Hong will become more fearless, and even more idiosyncratic, and this film is not as good as either TURNING GATE or DAY THE PIG, but is worthwhile nonetheless...
Visually stunning. First part is beyond brilliant, a short movie on it's own. The second part falls slightly short in comparison, but only slightly and because we're turning to the perspective of a new character. Can't wait to see more of Hong's work.
