The Sisters Brothers Diretto da Jacques Audiard
Screenwriter Thomas Bidegain and the director, Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Dheepan), have brilliantly adapted Patrick deWitt’s 2011 novel. They turn what could have been an arch picaresque narrative into a mock epic that grows more affecting and intense as it goes along.

If not strictly revisionist, it is in Warm’s musings of a utopian community that the film hits its most fertile terrain, tapping into the suggestive and seldom-discussed trope of the Wild West as a place where an egalitarian society could thrive out of anarchy.

Despite Mr. Audiard’s embrace of contemporary norms that would have been out of place in a Wayne western — the amusingly deployed coarse language, the shots to the head and sprays of blood — he isn’t attempting to rewrite genre in “The Sisters Brothers,” which is one of this movie’s virtues, along with its terrific actors and his sensitive direction of them.

  • chanandre's rating of the film The Sisters Brothers

[UCI EL Corte] One of the best Westerns of the last quarter of a century. The way John C. Reilly held to that shawl was the sweetest thing ever. Audiard pulled an Hawks showing prowess in a differentferent genre. "(...) the opinions that I thought I had of my own volition were in fact dictated by my hatred towards that man. I'm 35 years old and my life is like an empty cylinder." - John Morris : same here bruh </3

  • Benjamin Reid's rating of the film The Sisters Brothers

A darkly fun and smart po mo western that burns slow like a campfire. It tackles socialist struggle, inherited patterns of male violence, and the oft unchecked anthropocentrism of westerns. I cried because of the occasional warmth found in a time like our own where moral compasses feel so difficult to reset. Reilly/Phoenix have incredible chemistry, but the difficult to deny queer subtext of Gyllenhaal/Ahmed...wow!

  • paul_quixote's rating of the film The Sisters Brothers

Enigmatic & beautiful, quietly covers a lot of ground, both in terms of ideas explored and the emotional depths plumbed. Conflict isn't a static, driving force, it's a meandering thing that might come out of nowhere to bite you in the ass, or it might just fizzle and never be heard from again. Truly literary in the best sense, in that different passages/moments activate different feelings/ideas within me. Loved it.

  • Mcpeer's rating of the film The Sisters Brothers

This film is a miracle. A unique, idiosyncratic, 35-mil western-sibling-drama that aesthetically rivals the work found in QT/PTA. It's not trying to imitate anything other than the year 1851. Every location feels LIVED IN. Clothes don't look like they've come off a hanger from a truck. It's a different world, time, speed. Impeccable details Enjoy - movies that pay to do it right won't be around unless you watch them.

  • Jason's rating of the film The Sisters Brothers

THE SISTERS BROTHERS is one of the most intelligent and layered mainstream movies I have seen in years. It counts on a certain estrangement of the viewer in order to access the deeper neurons. Using a Western template, it draws attention to the arrested development inherent to men and their impaired relations within the context of supposedly civilizing systems. Progress without progress, men without compass. So rich.

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film The Sisters Brothers

The western redesigned from the inside. The last great psychological western is Appaloosa. This one thrills by a great screenplay, like CIMINO's Heavens Gate. Awesome cast, the music a delight. === Le western repensé de l'intérieur. Le dernier grand western psychologique est Appaloosa. Celui-ci passionne par un formidable scénario, à l'instar de Heaven's Gate de CIMINO. Casting génial, la musique un régal.

  • Ethan's rating of the film The Sisters Brothers

Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly are nothing short of brilliant here in this gritty and realistic Western from the great Jacques Audiard, who touches on the alcoholism, greed, loneliness, and constant dangers of the untamed American frontier. This film has a great look and a feeling of uneasiness as we go on a journey with these very flawed characters, just trying to get back home.

  • Jérémy Poirier's rating of the film The Sisters Brothers

An interesting but somewhat underwhelming viewing experience. On one hand you have some decent acting from Phoenix and especially Reilly but the narrative is inconsistent and quite messy. The directing, cinematography and score are superb but something seems incomplete. Maybe its the comedy that feels odd and misplaced. Plus, the film has a surprising beautiful depth but waits too long to show up. Still enjoyable.
