An important work, beyond any facile star-rating ... it makes you feel the weight of history, the grinding mechanisms of government and society, the unfurling consequences of people's allegiances and decisions.
Without a Big Narrator and plenty of conversations. History beyond the facts, tell it as a gossip with testimonials from every single points of view with Nazi's propaganda sparkled. Perefectly crafted, a master piece.
Righteously bitter film. The style is somewhat unstructured, but I found it really picked up in the second part.
Also, I found the ghost of WW1 looming throughout the whole film (especially in regards to the German interviews), although perhaps that is another documentary unto itself.
