    Cinema. Since he was confined to the prohibition of filming, Panahi's films, previously derivative, were conditioned to a slowing of the speed, as if the form incorporated the imposed political will and, by this way, it crossed it, lowering it. This film is no exception, although it increases the number of spaces and characters, his narrative mastery endures: ellipses (in and off of framing), sound out-of-frame.

    Viennale _ Panahi made with «Three faces» his best film without a doubt since the government forbid him to go on with his career. It’s of course about cinema (as a way to resist pressure) and society. Panahi has never been closer to Kiarostami whom he used to be the assistant. The work here on the sound, the framing and the off-screen is simply incredible. So you wanted to diminish iranian cinema ? You just can’t !

    FNC / Montréal / Entry 6: A relevant and thoughtful film about gender power dynamics and a pretty original and engaging road movie as well. It is symbolically charged, well written, well acted by the whole cast and visually minimalist. A nicely crafted homage to women and worth watching for its interesting points on the subject. So overall, a pretty good film but "3 Faces" does leaves much to be desired. 3.5 stars.

    While I do think 3 FACES is Panahi's finest film since his nominal filmmaking ban, it does not quite measure up to his early masterpieces (this is no CRIMSON GOLD). I do not think Panahi himself will ever be his own best subject, and much of the local colour is handled in an undercooked and fanciful manner. He is often at his best, however, when showing solidarity w/ women and girls. Behnaz Jafari owns the screen.
