The Chicago International Film Festival (CIFF) has been held since 1965. It is the oldest competitive film festival in the United States, and the fifth oldest overall after Columbus, San Francisco, Ann Arbor and New York. As the name indicates, CIFF focuses primarily on foreign films, and its Grand Prize winners (awarded the ‘Gold Hugo’ statue) have almost all been foreign films. The three occasions on which an American film won were:

1965 (1st CIFF): The Lollipop Cover
1982 (18th CIFF): Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean
2009 (45th CIFF): Mississippi Damned
