My picks for the best, most evocative depictions of The European Middle Ages. Some of these might score low on historical accuracy, but perhaps capture an essence of a time and place – an atmosphere – that other more “authentic” films might have missed.

Two films that should be on this list, “The Navigator: A Mediaeval Odyssey” and “The War Lord” (with Charlton Heston), are not available on The Auteurs. “Braveheart” and “The Seventh Seal” have been added in their place.
