My 10 favorite films from 2012, ranked in order. This is of course subject to change, (even tomorrow perhaps) so this is the 10 as of 12/31/11:
1. Holy Motors – Leos Carax
2. The Master – Paul Thomas Anderson
3. Tabu – Miguel Gomes
4. The Comedy – Rick Alverson
5. Barbara – Christian Petzold
6. Cosmopolis – David Cronenberg
7. Berberian Sound Studio – Peter Strickland
8. In Another Country – Hong Sang-soo
9. Silver Linings Playbook – David O. Russell
10. Looper – Rian Johnson
I will say that I felt more satisfied with last year’s crop of films than I did this year, but I also engaged in a last minute blitz of all the years acclaimed films that I had interest in seeing so I’m guessing I’ve missed some gems along the way.
To be on the list the films had to have made their world premiere in 2012. Some films which had their American theatrical release in 2012, but premiered in 2011, that might have made the top 10 include Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, This is Not a Film, The Turin Horse, Oslo, August 31st, The Color Wheel and Bernie.
Some films from this year that I’ll catch up with in 2013 which maybe could have made the list include Zero Dark Thirty and Post Tenebras Lux, among many others.*
Honorable Mention: Walker, Magic Mike and Keep the Lights On.
