In alphabetical order of the director’s name. Great movies that are above 4 stars for purely personal aesthetics. When I give a film 5 stars, I’m giving it 4 stars with my head, 5 stars with my heart. I think this ranking should not be allowed for commercial criticism, because it is too biased. Without a doubt, most of these need a 2nd viewing to better gauge if they deserve 5 stars.
(Note: Marat/Sade, The Iceman Cometh, The Sunset Limited, and Angels in America are adaptations of plays. I’m not sure whether I’m ranking them from the perceptive of cinema or theater, but I don’t care. What I do know is that the true greatness of those films comes from the script.)Read less
