As a Sandler defender/apologist I felt the need to do this.
The dude cares for his family so much and loves making movies with his friends… It oozes off the screen and I can’t help but enjoy it.
You can say he makes variations of the same film. Family is probably the biggest theme in all of them, specifically Father/Son conflicts. Time is also big. A lot of the characters are always stuck in the past, sometimes literally, or they abuse the power of moving forward.
And then the characters Sandler plays himself that are almost like Jerry Lewis’ idiot meets Al bundy. Punch Drunk Love gives us like a real world versions of that type (or a medicated version) with 7 sisters and an absent father (unless you count Hoffman’s Mattress Man like I do).
This a lot of rambling but overall his sense of humor works for me, as tasteless as it can be sometimes.
Maybe the definitive Sandler scene.Read less
