Alice Guy-Blaché was the first female filmmaker the world had seen, and created the first narrative film as we recognize it today. Her impact on the movie industry is sidelined in cinematic history without fail, but recently, her esteem has deservedly grown. Her work was imaginative and her business acumen made her a creative and financial force to be reckoned with. Guy-Blaché’s fading into obscurity in the 1920s, as was the case with many film pioneers of the late 1890s and early 1900s, was frustrating for her. But recent celebrations are heartening for those wanting to see the importance of her work elevated.
