I try to update the list every new year, with three conditions:
For a film to qualify:
1. I have to have seen it at least twice, and
2. It must be at least five calendar years old.
3. No director may occupy more than three spots on the list.
To me, these rules make for a more broadly representative list, and, most importantly, one that takes into account the all-important “staying-power” factor. In my experience, there are few things worse than adding something to the old All-Time list only to sheepishly withdraw the title after a lackluster second viewing, or if the film has not withstood the test of time particularly well. Always unpleasant.Read less
