Jiří Menzel, Czechoslovakia, 1969) - A masterful mixture of subversive satire, tender storytelling and cheeky farce, Menzel’s fearless critique of the Communist regime’s treatment of Czech citizens was banned from release in 1969 and did not make its world debut until 1990, after the Velvet Revolution had ousted the Communist government from Czechoslovakia.
