Lost Highway (USA, dir. David Lynch)
Of all my Best of… lists so far, 1997 must have the most readily interchangeable top 5 (which makes somewhat of a mockery of the whole ranking system, doesn’t it? Aaahh well…)
Of all the years of the 90s, ‘97 probably produced more of my favorite films than any other. I only rgeret that I wasn’t at an age to see most of them in the cinema on their original release. As far as I’m concerned, any year that sees the release of such remarkable canon entries from the likes of David Lynch, P.T. Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Wong Kar-wai, Michael Haneke, Hayao Miyazaki, Werner Herzog, Sally Potter, Woody Allen, Neil Jordan, Luc Besson, Martin Scorcese and Paul Verhoven, should be considered a vintage year.
