Comments (* are the new films that I watched):Gp Rd Film Dir Film Title Comments 2 1 F.W. Murnau Sunrise Liked the simple plot, the interesting special effects of the inter-titles and the suspense during the front part before they went to the city. Felt that the adventure in the city portion was a little bit long winded though. 2 1 José Luis Guerin *Berta’s Motives Appreciated the contemplative mood close to nature and the intriguing discoveries by the period costume actress. The choral music and the special sound effects of the broken tape recorder were pretty interesting too. Didn’t really understand and was bored by many other scenes though. 2 1 Edwin *Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly The song was nice and the pig was cute! Also learnt a bit about Indonesian history from the film. 2 2 Edwin *Hulahoop Soundings Was pretty surprised at the explicitness of the girl’s fantasy but her school uniform looked quite cute! 2 3 Edwin *Dajang Soembi, The Woman Who Was Married To A Dog Reminds me a bit of Guy Maddin’s films. Thought the original folklore was more interesting! 3 1 Gustav Deutsch *Film ist. 1-6 Liked most of it except for the “Material” episode where I was totally lost. 3 1 Kenji Mizoguchi The Story of the Late Chrysanthemums Dragged a little bit more and the striving actor was less likable than the minister in True Heart Susie. 3 2 Kenji Mizoguchi Taira Clan Saga Liked the interesting story and the colorful costumes! 3 3 Kenji Mizoguchi Street of Shame The eerie music and the sequence towards the end left quite a deep impression on me! 3 4 Kenji Mizoguchi Sansho the Bailiff Liked the epic story and the beautiful cinematography! 3 5 Kenji Mizoguchi *Straits of Love and Hate Nice adaptation of Resurrection! 3 1 D.W.Griffith *True Heart Susie Liked the simple story and the amazing performance of Lilian Gish! The inter-titles were fun to read and the accompanying music was nice! 3 2 D.W.Griffith *The Musketeers of Pig Alley Interesting short story about gangsters in New York! 3 3 D.W.Griffith *The Sands of Dee Interesting short film! 5 1 Michel Brault *Les raquetteurs Interesting look at a particular sport! 5 4 Grzegorz Królikiewicz *Precursor Very abstract ideas coupled with interesting images! 6 1 Jafar Panahi The White Balloon Great performances by the kids! 6 2 Jafar Panahi The Circle Great acting by the actresses! 6 3 Jafar Panahi The Mirror Great acting by the young girl! Interesting twist on the reality TV concept! 6 1 Ritwik Ghatak The Cloud-Capped Star Great acting by the actress! 6 2 Ritwik Ghatak *The Golden Thread Nice songs and great story! Felt pretty sad for the family though. 6 3 Ritwik Ghatak *Ajantrik Thought the taxi driver was a very interesting character! Felt quite sad for the car in the end! 6 1 Todd Haynes *Safe Was anticipating a ghost to appear inside the igloo so thought it was a bit anti-climax when it didn’t happen. 6 2 Todd Haynes *Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story The barbie dolls remind me of Team America: World Police. Interesting cut between animation and documentary clips! 8 3 Ulrich Seidl *The Last Real Men Thought it was interesting to contrast the macho Austrian man who is a martial arts expert with the domestic Asian wives! 8 3 Bernard Emond *L’instant et la patience Liked the first person view imagined sequences with the voice-over narration in the background! 8 4 Lynne Ramsay *Small Deaths My favorite is the first segment. The close up shot of the little girl placed side by side with the faraway shot of her parents looked very nice! 9 1 Frans Zwartjes *Spare Bedroom Pretty hard to understand. My guess is that it is about domestic violence? 9 2 Leos Carax *Sans Titre Pretty cool special effects but I liked “Origins of the 21st Century” better. Wonder if Gustav Deustch got his ideas for his Film Ist series from this film? 10 4 Carol Reed The Third Man Pretty exciting! 11 1 Aleksandr Sokurov Mother and Son Great visual effects! 11 2 Aleksandr Sokurov Russian Ark Great visual effects! 11 4 Dziga Vertov Man With a Movie Camera Great visual effects! 12 1 Luis Bunuel Los Olvidados Liked the dream sequence! Learnt a bit about the Japanese gambling scene and yakuza culture! 15 2 Masahiro Shinoda *Assassination Great sword fighting sequence! I also learnt a bit about Japanese history from this film!
