At the turn of the century, the distinguished British critic chose 100 films, by 100 different directors, for The Guardian newspaper, and his excellent book A Century of Films. Swing High Swing Low is in the former, replaced by The Crowd in the latter. The films appeared in no particular order. Had he not set a limit per director, Mizoguchi (e.g The Life of Oharu) and his other favourite directors, eg Satyajit Ray, would have been strongly represented.
