While I’ve seen most of Edgar Ulmer’s films, I haven’t seen them all and some of those yet to be seen are probably essential viewing. I still haven’t seen his Yiddish films, Green Meadows and the Light Ahead, but I recently had the rare chance to see his Final one, the Cavern. Some of his more popular films, such as the Strange Woman and Bluebeard, have pleased me less than the oft more obscure ones listed here, but even those have elements I admire. Some of his more popular films, such as the Strange Woman and Bluebeard, have pleased me less than the oft more obscure ones listed here, but even those have elements I admire. Ulmer was a remarkable visual stylist but a good deal more as well. His commitment to his craft and art under difficult circumstances seems to have fueled his creativity and provided a remarkable subtext for the majority of his best work.
