These are films that have changed my perception of cinema — reminders that there are often unused dimensions in the medium and so much more potential than is ever fully realized. These are films that have changed my perception of cinema — reminders that there are often unused dimensions in the medium and so much more potential than is ever fully realized. A pivotal moment for me and film was around the two-thirds point of Celine and Julie Go Boating when I almost instantaneously went from total confusion to newfound understanding. The gears started turning, and I would be oh so patient with every film I encountered after that. In Play Time I was delighted at how much Tati was able to play with perspective of an entire world, and in Certified Copy I was shocked at how much Kiarostami was able to mess with my fundamental understanding of what I was witnessing. From metafiction to formative experimentation and from dream logic to deja vu, these films and ideas are formatively unconventional and prove that experiments in film are not just about images and techniques. If “Experimental Narrative” can be considered a genre, then I’ll consider it my favorite. I’m definitely on the lookout for more — help!
