2009 was quite the odd year for movies. After a smattering of smart, adult fare early in the year, the summer was off to a rollicking start with films as varied as Pixar’s Up (which contains the finest single scene of the year, it will have you weeping with superior ease) and the surprise hit The Hangover (funny, yes, but not as funny as some would have you believe). 2009 was quite the odd year for movies. After a smattering of smart, adult fare early in the year, the summer was off to a rollicking start with films as varied as Pixar’s Up (which contains the finest single scene of the year, it will have you weeping with superior ease) and the surprise hit The Hangover (funny, yes, but not as funny as some would have you believe). Then the true Summer of 2009 reared its ugly head, and film goers were treated, pardon me, subjected, to the disreputable likes of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. However, these mass marketed were greeted with open arms by a shockingly uncaring public. These brainless actioners flowered while more intelligent fare (namely Judd Apatow’s woefully miss-marketed Funny People) suffered a ghastly fate after a solid opening weekend. however, artistry and commerce did eventually coincide quite nicely with the Quentin Tarantino’s smashing Inglourious Basterds. The fall and winter, however, brought an embarrassment of riches, provided you had access to a venue that wasn’t still showing Transformers by mid-August. Going into December, I felt that 2009 had been a solid, if slightly lackluster, year. As I look back now, I see it as slightly above average. As it usually goes, some wonderful films were released this year, however the growing cinematic viewing trends of the populous are reason for worry. Nevertheless, here were 15 films that I found exceptional for a plethora of reasons….
