NOT YET ON MUBI, BUT A DEFINITE INCLUSION: Seeing in the Rain by Chris Gallagher, 1981. A straight line down Granville St. in Vancouver, seen through the windshield of a bus. The Bazinian slab of experience is ruptured by cuts, often timed to the ticking of windshield wipers, that push us back and forth in time and space. Like most of the best experimental films, it’s a radical fusion of documentary and formalist interference. It foregrounds the marriage of time and space in an obvious, lucid, beautiful way. Also: anticipates the cinema of Kiarostami, big-time. Probably my favourite short. The rest, in rough order of preference:
