I love animation. A lot. I am constantly watching new animated features and shorts, and searching for the absolute best ones, so this list will probably be updated frequently, though of course it will depend on the quality of the films I see, and the films I’ve already seen that get added.
The title of this list is pretty self explanatory. These are all the animated films that I’ve rated five stars. Five stars means I think the film is excellent. I noticed compiling this that there were far more American films than anything else, but please note that this is mostly because of Looney Tunes shorts. I know that there are a lot of films on Mubi that I have seen but not rated, and when I come across these I will rate and post them here. Also, there are many films that are very good, but didn’t quite make the jump from 4 stars to 5 stars for me. Finally, there are a good amount of films that I would rate five stars if they were on Mubi, but they are not yet in the database. I will try to compile a list of these and put them in the description soon, but this is a lot harder to do, so it may take awhile. Probably the biggest amount of these would be Fleischer shorts and Tex Avery’s MGM efforts, as not many of these are available yet in the Mubi database.
I found these impossible to rank, however, I did put the films that are probably lesser known towards the top, so the Disney, Warner Bros. and Studio Ghibli stuff is down towards the bottom, but that’s no indication of quality. I merely included the lesser known stuff at the top in hopes that more people might find out about them. So pay no attention to the order. I hope you enjoy!
Note: The Thief and the Cobbler refers to the Recobbled Cut, not the official versions, which are terrible, and would get two stars from me.Read less
