i dont know how many of these you will have already seen but here are 30 films that mean a lot to me and have shaped me filmically and as a person

1. trust- this used to be my all time fave i think it still is tbh i think youll really like it

2. what time is it there/vive l’amour- tsai ming-liang is my absolute fave director and like the ‘king’ of slow cinema- all his films follow the same character (sort of) so like could honestly watch any of the films but what time is it there is part of a trilogy of sorts followed by a short called the skywalk is gone and then the wayward cloud- the wayward cloud was the first i saw and is amazing and sprinkled with amazing musical numbers (also see his film the hole for equally amazing songs!) like cant recommend him enough

3. tropical malady/syndromes and a century- just as tender and beautiful as tsai’s films, weerasethakul’s films fill me with such a warm feeling

4. millennium mambo- hou hsiao-hsien is amazing and this is like absoulte fave film about ‘coming of age’ and generally being young- also v interesting in terms of memory/time- ft the best opening scene ever

5. u.s. go home- under-seen denis film and another amazing coming of age film with an amazing soundtrack ft major crushes vincent gallo/gregoire colin

6. party girl- great comedy romance w/ bae parker posey- ft 90s new york

7. post tenebras lux- my all time best cinematic experience was seeing this not knowing anything about it going in and like never been so blown away and haunted by a film

8. gimme the loot- just another v sweet coming of age film ft youth in nyc

9. i wish- kore-eda’s films make me warm and happy and this is like a v beautiful sibling themed one

10. good morning- fave ozu featuring the cutest kid actor of all time and like only really comedic ozu ive seen

11. les rendez-vous d’anna- this film breaks my heart and aurore clement’s face etched in my mind forever, fave akerman!

12. sink or swim- a v gd found footage doc about growing up w/ the most heartbreaking moving voiceover, so personal and tender

13, the terrorizers- this is one of my fave taiwanese films and has amazing framing and cinematography generally and a shocking ending

14. the innocents- honest to god scariest film of all time with the creepiest child actors going

15. cure- kiyoshi kurosawa makes the best and most terrifying detective films, this is the best one and honestly so scary!!

16. perfect blue/paprika- perfect blue is my fave anime, so so so much better than black swan (aronofsky stole so much from it) v violent and shocking but also a lot of fun- paprika is also great film about dreams and more broadly about cinema

17. looking for langston- so beautifully shot in black and white and a v important film

18. on the occasion of remembering the turning gate- hong sang-soo kind of just constantly makes the same film but its always a great film (often issues in his rep of female characters but like can deal , also have a v good article on this issue if youre interested)

19. pelo malo- a great venezuelan film from a couple years ago surrounding issues of ‘bad hair’ and gender- v harrowing

20.woman in the dunes- probably the most beautifully shot film ive ever seen , you can FEEL the texture

21. belly- hype williams only feature film often dismissed as a really long music video, which it is but its so much more and so beautiful to look at and nas + dmx are great in it

22. querelle- hard to pick a fave fassbinder but this one is kinda just the most theatrical i love it and really feels like the genet book its based on

23. where does your hidden smile lie?- pedro costa directed this film about the married directors straub and huillet, its a doc about them editing their film sicilia! and its just a really beautiful portrait of a creative couple and their interactions

24. last days of disco- fave stillman film ft best soundtrack of all time

25. leaving las vegas- like even if you hate nicolas cage i cant imagine hating this film? its very depressing tho like a heavy one for sure but yh elisabeth shue is really great in it also

26. black christmas- the ‘orginal’ slasher film and probs the best

27. sombre- a really horrible film to watch because its like a brutal depiction of a serial killer but grandrieux has such a distinct style and if you can deal with the brutality of it its defo worth it, his film ‘a new life’ is probs less intense but just as good

28. go- honestly such a fun fast-paced film and also has steal my sunshine on the soundtrack so you know it gd

29. audition- the best structured horror film ever, it builds so so slowly to a horrifying climax- i think watching this not knowing anything about it is probs the best way to view it

30. taste of cherry- hard to pick one kiarostami but his films fill me with a lust for life and just remind me of the beauty in the world when im down , they are probably the most sincere films on this good earth
