The LGBT community has come a long way, and so has its cinema. Europe has always been at the vanguard of this progression, and in the wake of censorship the U.S. has struggled to catch up. There are many important LGBT filmmakers (Almodovar, Visconti, Pasolini and Fassbinder all come to mind) but this list is about the depiction of gay characters or themes at the forefront of the film. Queer Cinema does not have to be camp, nor depressing and brooding. It especially does not have to be good simply because it chooses to focus on gay individuals. There are many important LGBT filmmakers (Almodovar, Visconti, Pasolini and Fassbinder all come to mind) but this list is about the depiction of gay characters or themes at the forefront of the film. Queer Cinema does not have to be camp, nor depressing and brooding. It especially does not have to be good simply because it chooses to focus on gay individuals. A film with LGBT themes can be on par with the best of auteur cinema, and here are my favourites. Some important ones may have been omitted simply because they are not my taste (ex. Latter Days, Priscilla Queen of the Desert) or because I have not seen them (ex. Boys Don’t Cry- I really should see it soon!). The first is a documentary about Queer Cinema in the United States which I recommend to all as a primer into the topic. This list is in no particular order, and will be an ongoing project.
