Georges Méliès created movie magic. The greatest auteur of the early years of the medium’s existence, Méliès’ féerie style was often duplicated, but never truly recreated. He made about 520 films from 1896 to 1912, when his film style was decidedly out of vogue and he lapsed into relative obscurity until just before the end of his life. Some estimated 200 films or more of Méliès’ are said to survive today, and more are discovered quite often. Excluded is 1910, as Méliès didn’t make any films that year.
