The last part of a film one is left with is the ending. Everything that came before leads up to this, the final moments, the closing wisps of film before the screen turns black, leaving you to contemplate its concluding frames. Days later, when a film gets this essential closing element just right, those images will stick in your brain, following you like a specter, indelibly, unable to be shaken. The power of the end cannot be overstated; here, I list what I believe to be 20 extraordinary, haunting, immaculately timed and executed film finales.
