John Sturges, between law and violence

Last Train From Gun Hill, Bad Day at Black Rock and Gunfight at the O.K Corral are absolute masterpieces. Hour of the Gun, The Magnificent Seven, Escape From Fort Bravo and The Great Escape are incredible pictures. In The Law and Jake Wade, Sergeants 3 and Never So Few I can see Sturges’ themes, but the results are far less complex and absorbing than in his best movies. Joe Kidd, The Old Man and the Sea and The Eagle Has Landed are just plain bad.
