This list is of films written or directed by men that show genuine insight into or sympathy for the experiences of female characters in relation to their sexuality and experiences as women. Some display this positively, some negatively, but all have a woman with a beating heart and the full complexity of humanity thanks to the talent of woman on screen and the men behind the scenes.
My lists are selfish. There are only films I have seen and remember clearly and for the most part enjoy. If I can’t recall the film or the key performance to a great extent, then it’s not here, as are films containing a striking performance (Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road or Cate Blanchett in The Talented Mr Ripley or the Elizabeth films) or an already iconic character (Natalie Portman in Black Swan or Rooney Mara in Tattoo) but I dislike as a whole.
I am in the process of sorting this list alphabetically by author. It’s going to take a while. ;)Read less
