In the late 60’s and early 70’s the middle aged man in America was lost. He looked back on his life and suddenly realized all of the things that he had been taught were important and meaningful (family, career, social status, right vs. wrong, trust in the establishment) left him with a yawning chasm of emptiness. A cycle of Hollywood films attempted to depict these middle aged crises and their protagonists search for meaning. A cycle of Hollywood films attempted to depict these middle aged crises and their protagonists search for meaning. Often in these journeys the middle aged man would meet the antidote to his troubles in the form of a member of the Counteculture, often in the guise of a young nubile hippie girl, who would temporarily open his eyes to a more meangiful way of living. Ultimately most of these films neither spoke to Middle American audiences or to the youth market. Failures but fascinating in their mixed messages and values.
