On February 19, 2009, Metro Weekly published a list of 25 Gay Films Everyone Should See. When I first saw this list, I was visiting some friends in Washington, DC, one of whom worked for the Human Rights Campaign. As a heterosexual, more or less unfamiliar with gay culture, I took this list and made it a point to watch all of the films on it within the next three months.
This is just as a basic list, nothing extravagant, or comprehensive, like Grey Daisies’ New Queer Cinema or Joe Bowman’s Fox and His (Queer) Friends, but I would suggest that this list could very well serve as a backbone to a gay cinema collection or viewing list, and the two aforementioned lists could serve as the rest of the skeleton and all of the tissue, organs, and organ systems.
The list is rather diverse, featuring comedies, dramas, documentaries, American, Israeli, French, German, low-budget, indie films, and Academy Award winning movies from the 1970s through 2008.Read less
