New Asian Cinema

by Jérôme Labarthe

This is my subjective, whimsical but fairly meticulously researched list – I’ve avoided the usual suspects like Takeshi Kitano, Wong Kar Wai, Apitchapong Weerasethkul etc and also avoided many titles that constantly re-appear more as a function of what is available in the West. I’m trying to focus on films that break new ground, deconstruct form, baffle all expectations of what “Asian” cinema can be. I’ve stuck to films made after 1990 so that they still qualify as “New”. This is a work-in-progress. Please enjoy and don’t hate me because I didn’t include “In The Mood For Love” -
