Canada is not neccessarily known for its great cinema. Homegrown films generally fail at the box office, and few are willing to take the risk and work in Canada. Many, like James Cameron, Norman Jewison and David Cronenberg will instead just move south. But for those who do stay and create excellent work, it can only be deemed auteur cinema. The conditions under which Canadian filmmakers work are difficult, so when they produce something truly excellent I admire their work all the more. In salute to my country, here are the best of the Canadian films I have seen, with more to be added as time goes on.
