All illustrations should be created in dimensions identical to the trim size of the intended book, scanned images should be sized at 100%, flattened to one layer (how?) and placed in your Word document at a minimum resolution of 300 DPI (90,000 pixels?) in each square inch. (If the image created in trim size scanned and scaled at 100% is to be spread over two pages as in a custom book cover, it must have a minimum resolution of 425 DPI or 180,625 pixels? or 600DPI with 360,000 pixels??) The maximum accepted file size for the book interior is 400 MB; interior templates provided; uploaded Word documents (a .doc, .docx, or .rtf. ) are automatically converted to print-ready PDF file for print application and also for online previewing via Interior reviewer . Tif files are edited with PhotoShop which can tell you the exact image size (W x H) but tif files are are too big (over 25MB) to send by e-mail to yourself. A better idea may be to save the images as high quality, i.e. 100% scaled, 600 DPI jpeg files after verifying that the original image is the correct dimension by scanning as tif and checking for size using PhotoShop.

Scanning/Differences in Photo and Graphics Images Photo images have continuous tones, meaning that adjacent pixels often have very similar colors, for example, a blue sky might have many shades of blue in it. Graphic images are normally not continuous tone (gradients are possible in graphics, but are seen less often). Graphics are drawings, not photos, and they use relatively few colors, maybe only two or three, often less than 16 colors in the entire image. In a color graphic cartoon, the entire sky will be only one shade of blue where a photo might have dozens of shades. A map for example is graphics, maybe 4 or 5 map colors plus 2 or 3 colors of text, plus blue water and white paper, often less than 16 colors overall. Scanners have three modes to create the image: color (for all color work), grayscale (like B&W photos), and lineart. Line art is a special case, only two colors (black or white, with no gray), for example clip art, fax, and of course text. Low resolution line art (like cartoons on the web) is often better as grayscale, to add anti-aliasing to hide the jaggies. JPG files are very small files for continuous tone photo images, but JPG is poor for graphics, without a high quality setting. GIF files (and other indexed color files) are good for graphics, but are poor for photos (too few colors possible). However, graphics are normally not many colors anyway. Formats like TIF and PNG can be used either way, 24-bit or indexed color – these file types have different internal modes to accommodate either type optimally.
Best Graphics File Formats for Desktop Publishing
Books with illustrations: Illustrations need to be scanned, so it’s a good idea to keep any drawings/paintings to a dimension that doesn’t exceed your scanner bed. Scan at minimum 300 DPI or at 600 DPI to get the best possible resolution when you insert it in your template for 8X10 or 10X16 (e.g. a book cover.) If the illustration is wider than the trim size and you decide to crop the image, keep in mind that the height will also shrink. You might need to take into account the outside, top, bottom and inside margins or leave an area for the text that is to accompany the illustrations. The best is to make the illustrations exactly the size as they will appear in the book, scale it at 100% and scan at 600 DPI and save as both TIFF and JPEG image, use TIFF for printing and JPEG (with less MB) for thick books with a lot of content or for e-books. PNG might also be a good choice for web publications.

Publishing in Braille This seems like a strange link to post on a MUBI list but I sometimes wonder what type of film experience is appropriate for the blind and the only way they can enjoy a “filmic” experience would be to read scripts in Braille or listen to recordings of the reading of the script. Perhaps it is difficult for the blind to have a visual experience if born blind but those who could once see might enjoy having a “visual” experience through the written (tactile) or the spoken (auditory) word.

Useful teaching texts are few. For all the wisdom in John Gardner’s “Art of Fiction,” his sallies against 1970’s experimentalism are aging poorly, and undergrads seem to dislike his curmudgeonly tone.E.M. Forster’s “Aspects of the Novel” is likewise yellowing at the edges. Classic reference books like Strunk and White’s “Elements of Style” and William K. Zinsser’s “On Writing Well” are thorough sources for writers of both fiction and nonfiction, but their focus on grammar and other supposedly arcane topics makes them slow going. (Maira Kalman’s illustrations for the new edition of “The Elements of Style” at least illuminate the Strunkian demands with quirky panache.) Eudora Welty’s “One Writer’s Beginnings,” Anne Lamott’s “Bird by Bird” and Stephen King’s “On Writing” are heartening, but perhaps because they’re so personal, the advice to be gleaned from them is scattershot.
