Granted, I haven’t seen EVERYTHING the mad German director has created. But with the recent MUBI retrospective (focusing on his Sirkian era) I thought I’d throw in my two cents!
I did like Maria Braun. I didn’t love it. I found the subtext far too exposed, trying hard to make its point at the behest of subtlety and emotion (which he did very well in Fear Eats the Soul). Maria is post-war Germany, and will f**k her way to the top, growing colder and colder as time goes by. Fine – I get it. The cinematography is great, too. But compared to the rest?
Merchant of Four Seasons, I might’ve actually enjoyed more! But in retrospect it isn’t as technically realised at MoMB, and seems dated.Read less
