Nr.4 “L’amico di famiglia” – Paolo Sorrentino- 2006 – Italy instead of his first The Consequences of Love

Full list with all 50 films at http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=388627155011

Theatrical Releases: Only 22 of 50 (less then 50%) had a release here in Austria.
13 of 24 were limited releases. 11 of 50 were major releases.
Countries: US 12, F, KOR 8, J 6, ARG, DEN, A: 3

Interesting Observations:
Even from the 12 US films 6 had no theatrical release. So you cannot say that
the dominant US marketing power is destroying our film culture. You can only say
that half of the good films can be seen, it gets worse every decade. Mostly
foreign film have no chance, but even the best US films not. It’s not the
tragic of the big marketing, it’s a drama of bad releasing and mainstream critics.

France and Korea are also dominant besides the US as expected, esp. with the raise of the
korean wonder 97 with the full peek around 2004. The japanese peek was earlier,
around 1999 and almost nobody survived my list, from the argentinian peek 2002
only 3 films survived in my list. And with Bielinsky even one from INCA.
Only one Song Kang-Ho film!

Also only marginal are the danish, austrian and romanian filmwonders from this
decade, the mostly unseen hungarian wonder didn’t make it at all.
Only one from belgium, but a lot of near misses.
Same for the one german film, even since the german films became much better than the
austrians since around 2005.
Only two italian films, and one of them is really brazilian.
Bellochio is gaining, Sorrentini still the master and Moretti’s
La stanza del figlio almost.
No excellent british film at all! Only some near misses. Dramatic change from the 90ies.
Loach best still the spanish war drama Land and Freedom.

Also Indian films lost its dominant position from the 90ies, Mani Ratnam alone
had 3 top films in the 90ies. Tamil cinema could not improve hindi musicals, was
even thrown out, and there is no new hindi superstar on the horizon who could
help the sinking ship. We still have to wait a few years for the new Amitabh
Bakhshan and Sharuk Khan. Iranian films and south-east asian were strong, but
not that strong, south-east asian maybe next decade. Last decade was China with
Zhang Yimou full of masterpieces. Now he got disciplined, and from the young
nothing really interesting is coming up. Only one from a novel author.

Only one Spanish film, Menem and Almodovar producing crap, but with Amenabar there
is hope. The best new still “Habla con ella”. The last decade was much better.
The overhyped portoguese films of this decade had nothing for me but terribly boring
socialisticly subventionized art-house crap.

Russian film industry with the raising Leningrad school around Balabanov seemed to have
survived the Tarkowskji treatment, but with S.Bobrov’s death the irrational pathos
seems to back again and killing quantity and quality. Before there was Brad, now
there was only Woyna. V.Sorokin is also getting worse.
Australia had Bad Boy Bubby last decade, this decade only Look Both Ways.

Yes, one the best majors this decade Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind had only a limited release here. They played
it only in the big megaplex outside the city, but not in the
city. And even this copy got destroyed and not replaced.

Expectations for the next decade:
Top countries 4 same.
Raising: Greece, Italy, Hungary and South-East Asia are waking up from the
dead. Already did.
South America still going big. Peru, Chile maybe. Argentina e.g. is just
revolutionizing theatre. Chinese films will get better again.
New US Stars: Andrew Bujalski, Danny Leiner, Todd Phillips, Aaron Katz.

Quality TV series as The Sopranos and Mad Men play the same
role as e.g. Twin Peaks and Riget (Trier’s Kingdom) in the
90ties. Better and more influental as most of the best
movies. It stays excellent as ever. Just next decade without
TV release of course. Even TV misses out quality. But David Chase
and Matthew Weiner will start making excellent movies. Better than A.Payne.

Prominent near misses:
My Sassy Girl (KOR 2001) – The best love melodrama of the decade. Before Amelie.
Control GB/B – Fell out it in favor of La Prisonera
Tan de repente ARG – Fell out in favor of Mar adentro
Üç Maymun TR – yes, no turkish film! Uzak, Iklimler also not.
Zodiac US – almost

Matchpoint + Vicky Cristina Barcelona US/GB/.. – almost
Le Scaphandre et la papillon F – only due to its historical betrayal
Soderberg’s Solaris US, hmm.
Aruitemo aruitemo (Still Walking), Nobody Knows, All About Lily Chou Chou,
Bright Future J – A shame, but no Koreeda Hirokaze, no Kurosawa Kyioshi, no Shunji Iwai.
Das weiße Rauschen D – in the context of his recent works it got worse.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Old School, Harold and Kumar I, Election, … US
- No Judd Apatow. The only big US teen comedy left is Napoleon.
No COEN film at all.
No Country just a nice Italo-Western tryout, but not more,
Woyna (RU 2002)
Dealer (HUN 2004)
Gran Torino US
The Hurt Locker US
Caos Calmo I
Knallhart D
