Movies about inmates in mental asylums come in all shapes and sizes there is already a giant leap from D. W. Griffith’s THE HOUSE OF DARKNESS to Robert Wiene’s THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI in the 1910-1920 decade. Films after that, be it in the non-fiction or fiction format have given powerfully cinematic treatments of people who are both vulnerable and dangerous, of internal instability residing in an institute of rationalized authority.
