Story of the Late Chrysanthemums.
International poll in 2002 by the respected British publication. The Godfather parts 1 and 2 were classed as one. Many were level, separated alphabetically. I hope next time (they’ve done a poll every ten years since 62) they poll more critics from neglected countries, particularly in Africa, Latin America and many parts of Asia; the geographical balance of participants was skewed. This sort of canonising of course tends to be exclusive of many less known treasures; some individual lists therefore can have greater value and interest than the overall result. Still, there are goodies here- not all familiar to regular filmgoers. The list can be used not only as a guide for possible viewing but also as a barometer of critical taste (among mainly Anglophone and Western critics), open to consideration for failings as well as approval. The whole idea and value (or otherwise) of canons is something that has been discussed on the forums. This is one snapshot: for a fuller picture of critical taste over the years, the site They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They?, with 1000 films ranked according to appearances in such polls and selections, may be of interest.
Update: no, S&S 2012 poll was also skewed towards Anglophone-Western tasteRead less
