Six or Seven Stars

by Eduardo
I would give five stars for a film like “La Femme d’à Côté”: it’s perfectly made, has a wonderful cinematography, colours, these things. Films like “Milou en Mai”, “If…”, “Fitzcarraldo” and “Kes”, too. There are some films, however, that I’d thought to see through them something more profound, that touched something, like Ingmar Bergman says in this excerpt: “Today, I feel that in Persona – and later in Cries and Whispers – I had gone as far as I could go. And that in these two instance, when working in total freedom, I touched wordless secrets that only the cinema can discover.” … Read more

To these films I imagine myself giving six or seven stars. To Persona and Cries and Whispers, though, I don’t know: I admire very much Persona for it’s new language, the beginning, middle and end, but the story itself was kind of weak compared to other films, maybe. Oh, thinking better in Cries and Whispers, it’s true, six stars! I’m just wondering. There are other films that I personally like very much that I would like to give six stars: “Au Revoir les Enfants”, “Murmur of the Heart”,“Baisers Volés”, “Domicile Conjugal”… All this stuff is so relative, this thing of giving stars to films, sounds ridiculous sometimes! Well, this is a kind of actualization, more rigid and conscious, of my previous list, “The best films I’ve ever seen!”

“+” means a crescent apreciation.
