All of these filmmakers have expressed a personal vision so strong that it may impair your own. Their visuals and ideas may permanently damage your retinas and…your mind’s eye. You will not blink. You might even HAVE to look away. (You know that scene from Un Chien Andalou? Yeah. That’s what these filmmakers are trying to do your emotions, subconscious and psyche.)

Pandora’s box will be opened. They will shake you, thrill you and shatter your nerves. They will find your threshold for emotional pain and repulsive on-screen imagery, and push you into the most visceral house of horrors you can imagine.

If you can handle it, you will experience some really provocative ideas. You will take an ugly trip into the darkness, but it is only through recognizing the darkness that we can discover the light.

  • It should be noted that I plan on watching most (or perhaps all) of these films as a way to find my own personal threshold for cinematic extremes. If I fear it, it is probably important; if it is not important, it might be only exploitative. I’ll find out soon enough.
