The first film of hers I watched was Chocolate, which contains a brilliant performance by Isaac de Bankolé (which my Congolese friends of the time admired and adopted as a talisman) and much of the extraordinary imagery for which Denis would soon be known, but also much more conventional narrative elements that she would soon discard.
