It may be assumed that I’m merely being perverse in excluding certain canonical movies from this list, but I’m concerned here with those aspects of Hitch’s work that most please me. Though the master seems to have greatly valued James Stewart’s contributions to a few of his films, I find his extremely mannered acting, folksy persona and generally obnoxious presence spoils those works that so many wise critics see as masterpieces. Though the master seems to have greatly valued James Stewart’s contributions to a few of his films, I find his extremely mannered acting, folksy persona and generally obnoxious presence spoils those works that so many wise critics see as masterpieces. It might be noted that most of the films listed here are centered on female protagonists and that psychoanalysis and mental illness are recurrent themes. In some of these works this central female character is the analyst and in others the analysand and in some she takes on the role of amateur detective, serving similar functions.
