twelve Favorite Kazan Films

Having at last gotten around to seeing Boomerang and A Face in the Crowd, I find that I must amend my list of favorite films by Kazan; but rather than removing any I’ve decided to expand the list to a dozen, though the order, of course, must change. I can’t bring myself to remove The Last Tycoon, even knowing that it was more or less disowned by Kazan. I like it just the same, especially for the performances of Robert De Niro, Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum, Theresa Russell, and Ray Milland, for its critical yet romantic view of the studio system and the omnipresent Monroe Stahr (so far from the actuality of his model, the despicable Irving… Read more

I can’t bring myself to remove The Last Tycoon, even knowing that it was more or less disowned by Kazan. I like it just the same, especially for the performances of Robert De Niro, Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum, Theresa Russell, and Ray Milland, for its critical yet romantic view of the studio system and the omnipresent Monroe Stahr (so far from the actuality of his model, the despicable Irving Thalberg.) Now I need to find a way to see his penultimate movie, The Visitors. What little I’ve seen, read and heard of it seems promising.
