Here are ten great films worth seeing that the common moviegoer has probably not seen. The list begins with a philosophical film about a knight playing a game of chess with death. Aguirre is spanish conquistador whose quest for greatness will leave a haunting feeling. The third film is about a french author who has a stoke and can only move his eyelids yet most continue through life. The fourth film is a wonderful samurai movie that questions the samurai’s honor code and existing power structure. In the Mood for Love is a visually stunning film about submerged passion and hidden desires. Breathless is an iconic french new-wave film that follows a detached youth as he commits crime and love. Four Lions is a dark comedy about the life’s of four blunderous wannabe terrorists. Contempt is a wonderful story about film and a dispassionate relationship. Paths of Glory shows WW1 and shines a critical eye on wars and the politicians and generals who run them. M “merges trenchant social commentary with chilling suspense, creating a panorama of private madness and public hysteria.” To end the list I have chosen a nice light dessert. A short film that uses still frames to describe the chilling sci-fi story that was later told through the film 12 Monkeys.
