Many of Walsh’s films I watched and appreciated as a child without knowing anything of the man who was primarily responsible for their making. Now I enjoy them all the more when I see them in good prints and recognize the consistently remarkable quality of the photography he facilitated and on which he insisted. Not that their other qualities are secondary, but the narrative ingenuity and engaging performances came through well enough on my boyhood TV screen. Many of Walsh’s films I watched and appreciated as a child without knowing anything of the man who was primarily responsible for their making. Now I enjoy them all the more when I see them in good prints and recognize the consistently remarkable quality of the photography he facilitated and on which he insisted. Not that their other qualities are secondary, but the narrative ingenuity and engaging performances came through well enough on my boyhood TV screen. Of course some of the best of these I’ve only just seen for the first time relatively recently and it’s these ones, particularly Me and My Gal and the Man I Love, that hit me hardest. There is one I want very much to see that I assume would be on this list were I fortunate enough to see it. That would be They Drive by Night. Here’s hoping the opportunity comes soon. It’s possible that the Strawberry Blonde belongs on this list as well, but it’s been more than fifty years since the last time i watched it.
