This list has been expanded and its criteria changed. I now include multiple films of plays and by a given filmmaker. They are also now listed chronologically rather than preferentially. I’ve included four of Welles’ adaptations, three of Moshinsky’s, and two each of Olivier’s, Kurosawa’s, Kozintsev’s, Edzard’s, and Almereyda’s. Griffith’s pantomime adaptation of the Taming of the Shrew was made in his first year as a director.
