This is what I’ve seen from a couple of my favourite filmmakers, Joel and Ethan Coen, ranked in order of personal preference.

I think what I like most about their films is that they always feel like something is going on beneath surface, something other than what is literally presented in the plot. Movies like Barton Fink and The Man Who Wasn’t There seem somewhat simple at first, but include certain sequences and hints in the mise-en-scene that suggest something far more unusual.

Their remake of The Ladykillers isn’t listed on the site, but I would list it behind A Serious Man and ahead of O Brother, Where Art Thou?
