Through The Looking Glass

by Lisca Bianca
Work in progress… With Lewis Carroll as a handy starting point, this will be another exploration of visually (and if i’m lucky, perhaps thematically as well) similar films. That is, a pairing of films that don’t appear to have anything in common at first sight, rather than studying remakes and films from the same filmmaker, which would by definition share a common factor. Eventually, this might end up being a study of Picnic at Hanging Rock alone, as it appears to be some sort of cinematic crossroad from my perspective, connecting otherwise unrelated films. * * * * Picnic in Wonderland / Alice at Hanging Rock * * L’avventura at Hanging… Read more

Eyes Wide Shut / The Red Shoes

This collage made sense only in retrospect, I wasn’t entirely sure while assembling it. Only after I had finished cutting and pasting I remebered that Kubrick’s second wife Ruth Sobotka was a ballet dancer. And then I also remembered that she was Austrian, as was the author Arthur Schnitzler, whose Traumnovelle is the basis of Eyes Wide Shut. The final puzzle piece was my accidental discovery that Anton Wolbrook (birthname: Adolf Anton Wilhelm Wohlbrück) of The Red Shoes was born in Vienna, and I was pleasantly surprised that my pairing of the two wasn’t arbitrary after all.

[Update oct 2013]

New batch of screenshots mainly for Fay Masterson’s striking resemblance to Moira Shearer (how could I’ve missed that before??) Also, I love Nicole’s and Moira’s facepalm.
