For me personally, the 2000s have been an interesting decade. For one, this was the decade where I first really had started getting deeply into film. I went from being 9 years old at the beginning and 19 at the end. So, some of the films that seemed good in the early part of the decade, I eventually thought they were completely terrible by the end. I don’t think I’m as upset with this decade as a lot of people are. It wasn’t the greatest decade for film, but we got some really good stuff in the mix, and for better or for worse, there has without a doubt been a definite change in look and storytelling…but that goes without saying with every decade…woops.
One good thing about the last decade was the year 2007. It was a shining time in film where there was at least 7 absolutely classic films released. If I were to pick the best individual years in film, 1994 would be at the top, while 2007 would not be far behind.
Animation at the beginning of the 2000-2010 decade was a suffering genre, only to become really impressive at the end. Pixar being the obvious king of the art form.
The documentary-film was also quite strong, some movies, for the first time that I can remember, got huge recognition from the public (Michael Moore films, Super Size Me, Grizzly Man,etc.).
However, the genre that took the biggest hit in the negative direction was horror, which is a big problem for me, as horror was probably the genre that first kick-started my interest in film. There are only a handful of movies I can think of that even seemed noteworthy in a sea of what seemed to be deliberately crappy remakes and sequels (Audition, The Others, The Mist, Frailty, The Descent, Devil’s Rejects, 28 Days Later, Paranormal Activity, Hard Candy, Drag Me to Hell, Let the Right One In) and some of those I love, and some I only enjoyed marginally. So, some good from this decade and some bad.
Originally, I wanted to make a top 50 list at the beginning of 2010, but I thought showing just my 10 favorite films would better explain how I thought about film to come out the last 10 years, and truly show what I felt was the absolute very best of the decade… I’m excluding animation because I give them a much different criteria, and it’s hard to rank them with other forms of film making.Read less
