I’m still not sure exactly how I feel about H.G. Lewis. On one hand, he’s a fascinating fellow with plenty of amazing stories about the making of his films, for which I have a soft spot, though they are not so good technically. I think the only genuinely good movie he ever made, out of the ones I’ve seen, was The Gore Gore Girls — it’s funny, and it’s actually pretty stylish in a low-rent sort of way. But I can’t get behind his philosophy that filmmaking is only about making money and that it shouldn’t be regarded as art. That’s why I’ll never say H.G. is one of my favorite filmmakers, even though I respect him and his work.
