TOP 20: COMEDY

by Jessica McFarland
Obviously this will be changing as I see more things, but here’s a list of my top 20 comedy movies of all time. I define a comedy movie as a film whose primary purpose is to make the viewer laugh. Comedy is a difficult thing to nail down – what might be hilarious to some people can leave other people quirking an eyebrow in confusion (I’m looking at you, Step Brothers.) I can’t say I’m proud of all of these, but they are honestly the movies that I find myself slipping comfortably into when I want something that will make me laugh, and maybe think a little.\ 1) Philadelphia Story; One of my top 5 movies ever. 1) Philadelphia Story; One of my top 5 movies ever. Dream cast. Witty/Quick
2) Some Like It Hot; There’s a reason it’s always on the top lists. Silly/Absurd
3) Josie and the Pussycats; Seriously you guys. So underrated. Smart/Satire
4) Scotland, PA; I love that someone thought that a 1970’s adaptation of Macbeth set in a fast food restaurant seemed like a good idea. AND it has Christopher Walken. Smart/Absurd
5) Heathers; Dark, quotable, and easily one of the smartest high school movies around. Satire/Dark
6) Life of Brian; More linear than Holy Grail, but with all the required silliness that is the earmark of the Python Boys. Silly/Smart
7) Annie Hall; This is a hard one to categorize… not necessarily laugh-out-loud funny, but Allen at his best. Witty/Surreal
8) Superbad; This is what teenage boys are like. Filthy, but almost unbearably earnest (and in a strange way sort of innocent.) Silly/Raunchy
9) Pumpkin; Such a strange movie – Ricci is an underutilized actress. Smart/Dark
10) Galaxy Quest; I LOVE Star Trek, and I LOVE this movie. Satire/Silly
11) Dogma; “God has a sense of humor – just look at the platypus.” Smart/Raunchy
12) The Jerk; What is there to say about Steve Martin? Silly/Absurd
13) Bringing Up Baby; Hepburn in an unusual turn as a screwball comedienne. Silly/Quick
14) I Love You, Man; Exploring the ‘bromance.’ Awesome cast. Fun/Silly
15) Tommy Boy; Farley is an utterly endearing man-child to Spade’s dry desk jockey. And a road trip! Absurd/Fun
16) Austin Powers; Not proud, but I love this one. Absurd/Satire
17) Mean Girls; Surprisingly fresh. Dark/Witty
18) Pineapple Express; A stoner comedy I can actually get behind! Absurd/Raunchy
19) Clue; Board game turns feature film… how can it go wrong? Silly/Satire
20) How to Marry a Millionaire; Clever and sweet – and not too terribly woman-punishing like many comedies of the era. Quick/Fun
